INSTEAD of letting unused items gather dust, take them back to stores to get money off on something new.
We all know about recycling mobile phones, but nowadays you can also trade in old game consoles, sports gear, furniture and books.
Here are some of the best schemes . . .
ON YOUR MARKS: Sports store chain Decathlon has expanded its buy-back scheme and now, as well as bikes, you can return fitness equipment, racquets, kayaks, paddleboards and camping gear previously bought at their stores.
Just fill in a quick online form to get a quote.
Check out the Second Life section at for a good deal on returned equipment.

SWEDE REWARDS: You can take some Ikea furniture back to a store to get a refund card you can then use for something new.
Register the item online first to get an estimate of its value.
Returned furniture is sold in the Re-shop and Re-use section of Ikea’s website.
CLOTHES THREAD: Many high street stores take old clothes off your hands and give you a voucher in return.
They include H&M, Marks & Spencer if you have a Sparks Card, and John Lewis with a store loyalty card.
NEW LEAF: Online sites such as Ziffit give you money for old books, and so does WHSmith — through its BookCycle scheme, you register your old books via its website then take them to a participating store to get an eGift voucher emailed over to you.
Your old books will then be passed on for another reader to enjoy or will be recycled.
