EXPLOSION OF COLOUR: A seed bomb is a small cluster of seeds, often stuck together with clay or wet paper.

It can be thrown into a pot, flowerbed or wild patch of land and the seeds should grow into colourful clusters of wildflowers.

They will attract bees, butterflies and other insects.

MIX IT UP: To make a seed bomb, the Wildlife Trust recommends using wildflower seeds, peat-free compost and powdered clay (from craft shops).

Mix together a cup of seeds with five cups of compost and two or three cups of clay powder.

Slowly mix in water with your hands until everything sticks together, then roll the mixture into firm balls and leave them to dry in a sunny spot.

Plant your seed bombs by throwing them at bare parts of the garden and wait to see what pops up!

PACKET IN: The easiest way to get a good variety of plants is to buy a pack of mixed seeds.

Aim for wildflowers that are native to the UK.

You can buy a Butterfly Seed Bombs Kit at B&Q for £1.75, down from £3.50, as well as a pack of Scatter and Grow Meadow Garden Seeds, down from £4.50 to £2.25.

WHAT A GIFT: Seed bombs are great to have fun with in your own garden, and they also make a lovely present.

You could wrap the bombs in tissue paper tied with string or ribbon.

They would make a thoughtful gift for Father’s Day or even a lovely thank you to teachers.
