CHEDDAR chompers have been left feeling cheesed off after a popular packet of sandwiches slices made a change that wasn’t so “grate”.

The swap from large rectangles to thicker, but smaller squares by big brand Cathedral City meant although shoppers are paying the same amount for the same weight, they often had to use two pieces a time, forcing them to restock more often.

So does size really matter and how do supermarket brands compare?

Cathedral City Mature Cheddar (6) 150g, £2.40 (40p per slice), Tesco - 1/5

AT a whopping 40p per slice there’s a whiff of poor value about the big brand cheesy contents of this pack – and the new smaller squares seemed a bit of a gimmick as they no longer cover a slice of bread.

Made with British Milk, the creamy cheddar is a familiar tasting fromage that is unlikely to offend any palates, but with only six shrunken slithers per pack you won’t get many sandwiches for your money.

Sainsbury’s Mature Cheddar Slices (10) 240g, £2.65 (26.5p per slice), Sainsburys - 2/5

WHILE these slices do offer much better value for money that the big brand, and they are a larger Sarnie appropriate sized wodge of cheese they are still at the pricier end of the supermarket own slithers – especially considering this pack is slightly smaller than most others, at 240g (compared to 250g for the majority of own brand cheese slices).

Decent quality cheese made with British milk and not too plastic.

Morrisons Mature Cheddar Slices (10) 240g, £2.75 (27.5p per slice), Morrisons - 2/5

A DECENT quality sliver from Morrisons but I was surprised by the high price for the store’s own brand slices, especially considering this is one of the smaller packs on offers at 240g instead of 250g (only Sainsbury’s is the same).

At least the slices are still full sized so will fit easily between a slice of bread just fine for quick and simple sandwich making, or use them on a salad, or oozing in a cheese omelette or on top of a burger.

M&S Medium Cheddar Slices (10) 250g, £2.80 (28p per slice). M&S/Ocado - 3/5

ANOTHER slightly costlier cheddar from Marks and Spencer which still offers the traditional large shape slithers and this pack is filled with a delicious tangy, complex flavour which has clearly been sliced from an excellent quality British cheese wheel.

Lovely and creamy with good robust slices that are ideal for sarnies, snacking or even on top of a pizza if you feel like going rogue.

You have 20/20 vision if you can spot the yummy cheese hiding among the healthy fruits and veggies in under 15 seconds

Valley Spire Mature Sliced Cheddar (10) 250g, £1.99 (19p per slice), Lidl - 5/5

A SUPER value fridge staple slices from Lidl, these ready-to-eat cheddar cuts are also an extremely good quality segment of tangy, pleasantly stinky fromage.

Nice big thick chunks which are ideally for popping into sarnies, hassle free, and substantial enough to be able to cope with a layer of pickle or mayo on top without making the bread go soggy.

Emporium Mature Cheddar Slices (10) 250g, £1.99 (19p per slice), Aldi - 4/5

ANOTHER standout value sandwich filler which comes equal first with Lidl on value for money, but takes the runner up spot on flavour.

Not much to complain about here, good sized slices that will easily fit on a piece of bread for sarnies, toasties or even melted into a jacket spud.

The cheese itself is perfectly fine although was a little rubbery in texture.

Asda Mature Cheddar Slices (10) 250g, £2.55 (25.5p per slice), asda.com - 2/5

Asda Mature Cheddar Slices were tangy, perky pieces of cheddar with a strong cheesy aroma and a cost-saving price tag

TANGY, perky pieces of cheddar with a strong cheesy aroma and a cost-saving price tag.

My biggest issue with these slithers was the slightly sticky texture which caused had half the packet to clump together meaning when I tried to peel individual slices away I ended up with a pile of shredded cheesy straws.

Not ideal if you are trying to make sarnies in a hurry for the next days lunches, and it did mean quite a lot got wasted too.

Tesco Mature Cheddar Slices (10) 250g £2.65 (26.5p per slice), Tesco - 4/5

Tesco Mature Cheddar Slices were very convenient and versatile and scored 4 out of 5

VERY pale looking pieces of cheese from Tesco but fairly well priced falling into the mid-range own brand cost category – these are still far cheaper and more keenly priced than the big name brand, but quite a lot pricier than offerings from discounters Lidl and Aldi.

Very convenient and versatile, these were nice thick slices making them ideal to sandwich between a more robust crusty loaf or bread roll.
