McDonald's unveils new Christmas ad featuring iconic 00s track and 'beats John Lewis by a mile'

MCDONALD’S has unveiled its Christmas ad for 2024 that some viewers have branded better than John Lewis’.

The fast food chain’s “The Gift of McDonald’s” 90-second video will air for the first time at 9pm tonight on ITV.

Set to popular noughties tune “Satisfaction”, by Benny Benassi, the clip starts with a couple sitting in their car tired after a day buying Christmas presents.

The Golden Arches are seen in the distance as the woman driver makes a beeline for the restaurant, taking a left down a seemingly innocuous road.

Seconds later, the street comes alive with impressive light displays flashing to the beat of the music.

Viewers see ribbons adorning houses, signs pointing towards the McDonald’s branch and inflatable Christmas characters lining footpaths.

Some iconic characters feature too, including Grimace, Birdie and the Hamburglar who all strike a pose as neon-lights.

Michelle Graham-Clare, chief marketing officer and senior vice president at McDonald’s, said: “Christmas is a magical time, but it can also feel like a whirlwind.

“With long gift lists, crowded shops, and endless wrapping, it’s easy to forget to take a moment for yourself or with your loved ones.

“That’s why we’re reminding everyone that the perfect festive break is always just around the corner.”

Whilst the new ad will make its first TV ad tonight at 9pm, McDonald’s already unveiled the clip on its Facebook and Instagram accounts earlier today.

Shoppers have been quick to react, with some saying its trumps John Lewis‘.

“At the moment I prefer this one to the John Jewis ad. Retro McDonald’s,” said one on Instagram.

“Beats John Lewis’ advert by a mile,” said another.

Meanwhile, a third chipped in: “Forget John Lewis, McDonald’s UK have won Christmas this year.”

Last year’s McDonald’s advert followed various groups of kids, co-workers, parents and party-goers fleeing the chaos of Christmas to grab a bite.

The 60-second clip was set to the soundtrack of Van Halen’s iconic 1980s smash hit “Jump” and sees Maccies fans give into their cravings.

The 2022 ad featured Alfie, a little boy overlooking a father and daughter playing together on a bike.

To comfort her distraught son, Alfie’s mum suggests they eat at McDonald’s which reminds them that at Christmas, it’s the little things that mean the most.

The year prior, in 2021, the fast-food chain warmed the hearts of fans showcasing the love between a girl and her imaginary friend.

Back in 2020, the ad was animation-based and was a heartfelt tale of a mum struggling to reconnect with her son.

How to save at McDonald's

You could end up being charged more for a McDonald's meal based solely on the McDonald's restaurant you choose.

Research by The Sun found a Big Mac meal can be up to 30% cheaper at restaurants just two miles apart from each other.

You can pick up a Big Mac and fries for just £2.99 at any time by filling in a feedback survey found on McDonald’s receipts.

The receipt should come with a 12-digit code which you can enter into the Food for Thought website alongside your submitted survey.

You’ll then receive a five-digit code which is your voucher for the £2.99 offer.

There are some deals and offers you can only get if you have the My McDonald’s app, so it’s worth signing up to get money off your meals.

The MyMcDonald’s app can be downloaded on iPhone and Android phones and is quick to set up.

You can also bag freebies and discounts on your birthday if you’re a My McDonald’s app user.

The chain has recently sent out reminders to app users to fill out their birthday details – otherwise they could miss out on birthday treats.

In other news, Maccie’s is launching a Christmas menu on November 20, featuring two new items – a Cheesy McCrispy and Terry’s Chocolate Orange Pie.

The fast food giant is also launching a new “Gift Drop” game on the same date which is running until December 19.
