DECONGEST: Eucalyptus, peppermint and menthol oils can help decongest bunged up noses.

Pop a few drops on a hanky to inhale or place inside your pillow at night to help get a better night’s sleep — just make sure it is out of reach from little ones.

Dr Roger Henderson is a GP who works with Olbas. He says: “Menthol is a popular ingredient because of its antibacterial and relieving effects.

Olbas oil is £4.99 from Boots, or Covonia vapour drops are £3.79 from chemist-4-u.com.

For really stubborn blocked noses, you can also add a couple of drops to a bowl of hot water, lean over it and cover your head with a towel to breath in the steam and vapour.

PAIN RELIEF: Body aches accompanying illness are horrid but usually a dose of light painkiller is all that is needed.

Big-brand medicines tend to be more expensive than own-brand alternatives.

A pack of 16 Nurofen costs £2.59 at Chemist4U, whereas at Tesco you can get its own 16 caplets of paracetamol for 37p, or 16 Ibuprofen tablets for 39p.

NATURAL REMEDIES: Rummage in your cupboards to make traditional remedies that can be an effective and satisfying way of relieving symptoms.

Sipping hot water mixed with honey, fresh lemon and ginger will help to soothe tickly coughs and aid your sleep.

Warning over popular over-the-counter cold and flu remedy that could 'worsen breathing'

If you have a sore throat, you can also try gargling some saltwater.

Dr Henderson says: “Saltwater can draw excess fluid from inflamed tissues in the throat, which in turn makes them hurt less by helping to loosen the thick mucus that is sat in the throat.”
