A MAJOR bargain chain will slash the price of nearly 900 essentials to just £1 or less next week in a new year boost for shoppers.

Poundland is increasing the number of items which cost £1 or less from around 1,500 to almost 2,400 in all its UK stores on Tuesday.

The lower prices will apply to a range of products including batteries, bleach, bread and Biscoff biscuits.

The move is the next major step in its promise to deliver amazing value to customers.

Across Poundland’s core range of around 5,000 items, about half will now cost £1 or less.

The news comes after Poundland cut the cost of key everyday essentials such as milk, bread, sugar and eggs before Christmas.

These items can all be picked up for £1 and are price-locked so their cost should not increase.

The discount chain also added fresh produce stands to more than 520 of its stores to sell everyday essentials such as apples and oranges for £1.

Poundland commercial director CJ Antal-Smith said the high street chain will do all it can to deliver the promise of amazing value to its customers.

He said: “According to the Bank of England, Poundland should be £2.42-land today, based on the way inflation has risen since it opened its first store 35 years ago.

“But Poundland is all about defying inflation and delivering amazing value and our customers are being very clear that they need us to be at our best in 2025 in the face of continued pressure on household budgets.”

Homeware will be one of the main ranges to have its prices cut.

Five ways to save money at Poundland

For example, a 38cm table mat previously cost £2.50 but will now be available for £1.

The cost of a drawstring laundry bag will also be cut from £2.50 to £1.

Meanwhile, a three-piece tea towel set will see the same price reduction.

Homeware essentials including a rib glass soap dispenser, two pack of picture frames and a glass vase will also be on sale for £1.

What else is changing at Poundland?

Outside of the £1 or below range, shoppers will be able to get significant savings on other home items.

The cost of a 180 x 220cm beige velvet bedspread will be halved from £20 to £10.

Meanwhile, a bamboo cutlery draw organiser will have its price halved from £12 to £6.

A coffee table hyacinth will also be reduced from £15 to £7.

The cost of clothing will also be cut.

The price drop will include kids and baby clothing, where prices will start from £1.50.

Meanwhile, men's and women’s t-shirts will be priced from £2 and women’s sweatshirts, knitwear, denim and dresses from just £5.

The discount chain is also making huge changes to its Perks offers, which are available in its app.

For the first time these offers will include its chilled and frozen food ranges which are now in the majority of its stores.

For example, McCain micro chips currently cost £2 but will be available for £1.50 with a 50p perk voucher.

A Chicago Town Twin cheese pizza will set you back just £1.50 with a 25p perks voucher.

Meanwhile, a Rustlers hot dog will cost £1 with a 25p perks voucher.
