Coffee giant Costa charges shocked dad £599 on credit card bill for a cappuccino and slice of cake in a HOSPITAL
Eye-watering charge was 100 times more than his £5.99 bill and company has offered him £10 voucher in compensation
THIRSTY Paul Harris grabbed a quick coffee — then found out it cost him £599.
The dad-of-three popped to a hospital’s Costa for a cappuccino and carrot cake.
He paid £5.99 with a credit card. But when he checked the bill two weeks later he had been charged 100 times more.
Paul, 51, said: I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it on the statement.
“I was trying to remember what fun I’d been having in Costa because on paper it looked like one hell of a caffeine fix.
“My bank said it was funny and probably the most expensive cup of coffee I’d ever had.”
Paul and wife Lucy, 43, were visiting the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford where son Aaron, 18, was treated for a broken hand.
Paul has been offered a £10 voucher and is waiting for the £593.01 he is owed.

He has been told to recover the cash from card provider Lloyds which will then retrieve it from Costa.
Paul said: “It’s lucky I didn’t pay on my debit card, you never know what bills you have coming out.”
The chain said it would cover any costs such as interest.
A spokesman said: “At the time of getting in touch with Costa, the customer was in the process of recovering the charge from his bank.
“It was advised that any resulting costs of recovering the charge should be documented and as a matter of courtesy Costa would cover these.
“A gift voucher was offered as a goodwill gesture for the inconvenience rather than as compensation for the issue.
“Our customer service team are attempting to get in touch with the customer this afternoon to gain an update.”
