Disney Monsters Inc. mug pulled from shelves after it got STUCK on seven-year-old girl’s tongue for four hours

A Monsters Inc mug has been pulled from the shelves of the Disney Store after a child got her tongue stuck in it for more than four hours.
Seven-year-old Megan Donald’s tongue became jammed in the screw-top cup while at school in Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow.
It was eventually removed by hospital staff using a hacksaw and drill.
The Disney Store has withdrawn the mug and a further three similar ones from sale in stores and online. It is also in the process of destroying any remaining stock.
Megan’s mother Natalie, 31, who works in banking, has called for the “flawed” product to be recalled as she is worried the same thing could happen to more children.
She told the : “I’m just so surprised because Disney are a big company with a good reputation.
“I thought they would have done a lot more. They said would take the cup off sale but they wouldn’t recall them and they’ve not been in touch with me since last week.
“It’s my belief that it’s a design flaw – this could happen to other children.”
There is currently no central register for recalls, meaning shoppers have to rely on getting information about unsafe items from the media or notices that are put up in shops.
Only in the most serious cases will a retailer contact shoppers who’ve bought faulty items directly.
Mrs Donald was called to Megan’s school at 10.30am last Wednesday to find her daughter’s tongue had become stuck in the drinking spout.
The cup was impossible to remove due to a suction that had been created, as there were no ventilation holes.
Megan was given pain relief by the medical team at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow and they tried to reduce the swelling with ice.
Mrs Donald said: “They tried to ice her tongue, gave her diamorphine and something to reduce the swelling – but it didn’t work because the lid was stuck half way up her tongue.
“When they gave her a local injection she was screaming and I had to hold her down – they used what looked like a dentist’s drill which worked.”
Megan was unable to eat properly because of the swelling and missed a week of school due to the incident.
A Disney Store spokesperson said: “This is undoubtedly an unfortunate incident that we’ve taken seriously by immediately stopping sales of the mug from our stores and websites and destroying all other existing stock.”
Customers are able to return the travel mug and get a free refund but there are no plans to recall it.
