Tesco announces 10.5% pay increase for staff but Aldi is still the highest-paying supermarket in the UK

The UK's biggest supermarket has promised to increase hourly rates by 10.5 per cent over the next two years

TESCO is to give staff a 10.5 per cent pay rise over the next two years - but it's also cutting rates for those that work unsociable hours.

It means staff will get paid at least £8.42 per hour by November 2018, up from the current £7.62.

The increase is in line with expected minimum wage rises. At present, anyone over the age of 25 must be paid at least £7.50, while those between 18 and 20 get £5.60 per hour.

Tesco's wage increase is happening in three stages, first it will go up to £8.02 in November 2017.

Then in July 2018 it will go up to £8.81 per hour, before finally hitting £8.42 in November that year.

But it isn't the highest-paying supermarket in the UK - that crown still belongs to Aldi.

The bargain supermarket announced a pay rise for more than 3,000 staff in January.

Employees now earn at least £8.53 an hour or £9.75 if they live in London.

Tesco said today that it is ";bucking the trend across the retail sector", as it continues to pay extra for staff who work Sunday or Bank Holiday shifts.

But in a bitter blow, the amount being paid for these shifts is being cut.

At present staff are currently paid time and a half but from July 2018 they will be paid just time and a quarter.

The supermarket giant claims that 97 per cent of employees will be better off.
