FORWARD planning is a great way to cut down on your grocery bills, but the best of intentions after a big supermarket shop can go to pot - and result in lots of food being chucked in the bin.

According to the latest statistics, Brits are throwing out £13 billion worth of food annually, costing each household around £700 each year.

Now a meal saver website promises a solution by telling you what to make for dinner based on what's already in your fridge.

lets users give an inventory of their fridge’s content and gives them recipe options based on those items.

Ingredients are separated into categories such as bread, canned products, condiment, pasta /grains and the options are pretty extensive.

As users check the boxes with the products that they have at their disposal and click on "Find Recipes", they’ll be given a range of recipes of meals they can make.

If the recipe requires something other than what they have on hand, the website will list the items needed to complete it.

MyFoodFridge also includes pages of cooking tips such as a list of the easy ways to test the freshness of eggs or how to fix burnt rice.

If the design of the website is pretty basic, the idea behind it could be a game changer.

After selecting four ingredients - apples, broccoli, chicken and cream cheese - MyFoodFridge gave us more than ten recipe options including cream cheese pancakes, chicken and broccoli rolls and teriyaki bowl.

Writing about the website on the Facebook group “”, founded by bargain hunter and blogger called Ricky Willis, member Wendy Jacobs said: “If money is tight at the end of the month and you're struggling with what groceries you have left to make a decent meal for your family, then this link might just be the answer to your prayers.”

“These sites are perfect for the things that are abandoned at the back of the cupboard,” she added.

Different tech tools are already available for Brits to tackle food waste and save money in the process.

Hannah Maundrell, editor-in-chief of money.co.uk suggested consumers use money saving websites such as  to find the best deals or to get cashback on their shopping.

Tesco also has its own version of a leftover food tool called  where customers can find cooking tips and use the supermarket's meal planner.

Ms Maundrell previously told the Sun Online there are simple ways for UK families to cut down on their food shopping bills.

These include checking the small print when going grocery shopping, following their  favourite supermarkets on social media to track the latest deals and most importantly not going shopping hungry to avoid buying too much.

HOW TO CUT THE COST OF YOUR GROCERY SHOP

WE spoke to Hannah Maundrell, editor of Money.co.uk, about how you can cut the cost of your shopping bills:

  • Write yourself a list: Only buy items that you need. If it isn’t on your list, don’t put it in the trolley
  • Create a budget: Work out a weekly budget for your food shopping
  • Never shop hungry: You are far more likely to buy  more food if your tummy is rumbling
  • Don’t buy pre-chopped veggies or fruit: The extra they’ll charge for chopping can be eye watering
  • Use social media: Follow your favourite retailers to find out about the latest deals
  • Be disloyal: You may want to go to different stores to find the best bargains
  • Check the small print: It’s always worth checking the price per kg/lb/litre when comparing offers so you’re making a like for like decision as a bigger box won’t necessarily mean you get more
  • Use your loyalty cards: Don’t be afraid to sign up to them all. They all work slightly differently – work out what bonus suits you better and remember to trade in your points for additional rewards
