MOST READY IN MONEY
It's great to be saving with our favourite paper
DEBBIE Mason and husband Paul fell in love while reading The Sun together at work. More than 30 years later, they still read their favourite paper and have become Sun Savers. Debbie, 52, and Paul, 59, from Tamworth, Staffs, plan to keep the £5 a month and put it towards a holiday. Debbie says:
"It’s great to be saving money with our favourite paper.
"We met when we worked at a stationery company. I was in sales and Paul was the warehouse manager.
“Every lunchtime we read the paper together and now we are grandparents and we’re still reading The Sun. Sun Savers is such a brilliant idea."
I get something back for buying The Sun every day
LONG-TIME Sun reader Sandra Coomber, 70, from Warmley, near Bristol, reckons the Sun Savers scheme is a no-brainer. Sandra lives with her husband Peter, also 70, who is a retired delivery driver. She says:
"I remember buying the Sun newspaper back when it was a broadsheet, and I’ve always been a fan of the promotions.
"The Sun Savers app is great. I’m getting something back simply for buying the newspaper every day.
"I find the code in the paper and scan it in on my iPad, taking no time at all. The app works really well. I’ve got £31 saved up to treat myself to something nice when I fancy it."
I'll carry on saving fivers for victims of Manchester attack
RETIRED driving instructor David Lambert, 65, of Bagillt, Flintshire, sees Sun Savers as a fantastic bonus. This month he used his fiver to pass on the good fortune, donating it to the fund for those affected by the Manchester terror attack. He says:
"I’ve been buying The Sun since the Seventies, there’s no paper out there to rival it. I’m renovating an old Ford Capri as a retirement project, so I saved up the first £35 from Sun Savers for some car parts.
"When the Manchester terror attack happened, I donated my next fiver to the fundraising campaign. I’ll carry on saving up the monthly fivers to pass on to those who need it."
We bust the myths about Sun Savers
Myth 1. There are loads of hoops to jump through.
WRONG. Register your name, date of birth and email, start entering codes and you’re off.
Myth 2. It takes ages to get the fiver.
WRONG. Link your bank account to get it in three to five working days. Or use Paypal and get it instantly.
Myth 3. I have to download an app.
WRONG. We have a sparkly new website too. Just go to .
Asking for it
NO matter how good you are at bagging a bargain, there’s almost always an extra saving to be made.
According to , 60 per cent of Brits who haggle in big High Street name stores get more money off, rising to 97 per cent in smaller independent stores.
Not everyone is comfortable asking for a discount, so here James Walker, founder of the consumer site, gives readers his magnificent seven tips.
1. Target the right person. Department stores and brand boutiques often have a ‘no discount’ policy – and it’s programmed in to the tills. Don’t waste time talking to sales assistants, ask the floor managers.
2. Be concise. Say why you want the discount but don’t waffle. Say you’re pushed for time and you need a quick decision.
3. Word it well. Ask “closed” questions. “You can give me ten per cent off that?” is harder to say no to than “can you give me a discount?” Then pause after you’ve asked. It might feel uncomfortable, but it’s much harder for the other person to say something that isn’t positive.
b. If you’re after a big discount, be enthusiastic about the product when you go in, then say you need to think about it. Shop assistants know you’re less likely to buy when you’re out of the shop and weighing things up.
5. Don’t be afraid to walk away. Point out you’ve seen a reduction in a rival shop and if they turn you down, politely say you’re disappointed but you understand. Come back 15 minutes later and browse. The assistant may have spoken to a senior colleague and could offer you a deal.
6. Go independent. You’re more likely to get a discount from an independent shop. Point out similar shops and mention they’ve offered to meet your ideal price.
7. Don’t give up. If you’re turned down, try again somewhere else. You’re unlikely to see the sales assistant again so don’t be embarrassed.
It's really straightforward
FORMER housekeeper Susan Chapman, 66, from Seasalter in Kent, says that Sun Savers gives her and husband Roger, 69, a bit of help to pay bills.
She says: “We are pensioners and it can be a struggle to make ends meet. We’ll probably use every £5 we save up to pay the gas bill. I read about the Sun Savers in the newspaper and got straight on my laptop to set it up. It was really straightforward.
“I go to the website and save the code every day. It works perfectly.”
