These delicious meals prove chocolate doesn’t just have to be a dessert
The sweet treat is actually hugely versatile, and goes well in many savoury dishes

AUTUMN means we can indulge in rich, satisfying meals and comforting food – and there is nothing more comforting than chocolate.
It is hugely versatile too, and can be used in savoury dishes as well as sweet.
Here are some yummy chocolate recipes that are easy to make at home. Enjoy!
Chilli with chocolate – £1.13 per serving
SERVES 6
Preparation: 20mins. Cooking: 3hrs
One serving contains 340 calories (17% of recommended adult daily intake); 8g fat (11%); 3.5g sat fat (17%); 26.5g sugar (29%); 1.33g salt (22%)
YOU NEED: 500g Morrisons British Lean Mince Beef Steak 5% Fat
1 onion, chopped
2 sticks of celery, finely chopped
2 carrots, finely chopped
2 tbsp tomato puree
250ml hot water
2 tsp chilli powder (mild or hot, depending on how you like it)
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tspn paprika
1 tbs ground cumin
1/2 tsp dried oregano
Salt & black pepper
2 (400g) tins chopped tomatoes with garlic, undrained
1 (410g) tin kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 green pepper, sliced
1 red pepper, sliced
55g plain chocolate, chopped
METHOD: Combine minced beef and onion, celery and carrot in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring, until beef is really well browned, for about ten minutes.
Then add in the tomato puree and cook out slowly for another ten minutes.
Use 50ml of the water with all the dried herbs and spices to form a paste. Add to the pan and cook for a further two minutes.
Transfer to a slow cooker. Stir in the rest of the water, the tomatoes, kidney beans, peppers and chocolate.
Cook on high until the chilli begins to bubble (about 30 minutes). Reduce the heat to low and cook until thick. This will take about two hours.
Serve with tortillas, sour cream and fresh coriander.
Savoury chocolate sauce – 50p per serving
SERVES 4
Preparation: 5mins. Cooking: 15mins
One serving contains 474 calories (24% of recommended adult daily intake); 37g fat (53%); 22g sat fat (109%); 29g sugar (32%); 0.28g salt (5%)
YOU NEED: 50g butter
1 tbsp olive oil
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 tsp red chilli, finely chopped
salt and pepper
250ml single cream, add more if you prefer a runnier sauce
175 g dark chocolate buttons, or chunks
METHOD: Fry the butter in the olive oil, with the garlic, onions, chillies and season with salt and pepper.
When the onions are soft, stir in the cream and chocolate. Warm through over a gentle heat and then serve.
Ultimate hot chocolate – 28p per serving
SERVES 4
Preparation: 2mins. Cooking: 5mins
One serving contains 400 calories (20% of recommended adult daily intake); 31.5g fat (45%); 19.5g sat fat (98%); 22g sugar (25%); 0.2g salt (3%)
YOU NEED: 600ml milk
142ml pot double cream
100g chopped chocolate
pinch of salt
pinch of cinnamon
METHOD: Pour the milk, double cream and chopped chocolate into a pan. Bring gently to the boil, whisking until smooth. Once all heated through, add the salt and cinnamon.
