We review KFC’s Double Down – but one crucial change is causing anger online
Over 100 KFC stores are unable to sell the new double down burger with one vital ingredient
KFC's Double Down burger has been launched with a massive fan fare - but some of its stores are selling it with a vital ingredient missing.
Over a hundred KFC branches may be selling the new limited edition burger minus bacon because they only sell halal-approved products.
The fast food chain is running a trial in 106 of its stores across the UK to test the success of halal food.
KFC states on its website that all non-halal products have been removed from these branches and this includes bacon and other pork products.
The breadless burger features crispy bacon, melted Monterey Jack cheese and barbecue sauce sandwiched between two tasty chicken breast fillets.
Some customers have also accused KFC of charging the same price at their halal stores, despite not serving bacon.
One said on Twitter: "One word review... Upsetting. Charged more than the advertised price in Camden. It turned up looking like a hot mess, WITH NO BACON."
Another added: "Lunch fail. excitedly went to KFC for a Double Down but it had no bacon as it's a halal branch. Will try a different branch later this week!"
Halal is an Arabic word for "permitted" or "allowed". It’s a general term used in Islamic law but often used to describe how meat is dealt with.
FRIED FANCY We give classic meals the Double Down treatment - and the results are interesting
Islamic rules require an animal to be slaughtered while alive and healthy and that the appropriate Islamic blessing is recited.
In the past, KFC has received hundreds of tweets and messages calling for the sandwich to be launched in the UK.
Those hoping to try the burger have just six weeks before it will disappear off the menu once more.
The Sun Online has contacted KFC for a comment.
SIX OF THE BREAST
Review by Giles Coronary (aka Andy Halls, fast food junkie)
KFC finally brought its meaty monster of a burger to the UK yesterday – and here I am sinking my teeth in as soon as it landed.
Available in the US since 2010, the Double Down features cheese and bacon sandwiched between two pieces of fried chicken – totting up to 513 calories and 23g fat.
But I try to concentrate on the 52g of protein per unit as I wolfed a common-sense denying SIX portions (strictly in the name of research).
After polishing off three, I still felt peckish and the lack of a bun made it feel fairly healthy.
So two more followed as I totted up the calorie count and the meat sweats began – though not before I packed away a sixth.
I mark the DD out of five below. A KFC spokesman said: “In moderation, our food can be part of a balanced diet.”
I’ll try “moderation” in future.
VERDICT: Delicious for the first three, then it went downhill.
Rating: ★★★★☆
