Lidl are selling a 22 year old scotch whisky for £39.99 – but it could be worth £150

The budget supermarket is adding a new taste to its Ben Bracken line of whisky cheaper than posher whiskys of the same age

WHISKY drinkers can give their wallets a break this winter because Lidl is selling a 22-year-old single malt whisky for just £39.99 - a fraction of the price of other whiskys of the same age.

Normally, you can expect to to pay up to around £150 for a single scotch malt whisky that is at least two decades old.

Younger whiskys that have been distilled for a shorter amount of time are usually cheaper, with a blended whisky selling for around £20.

Scotch whisky is made in Scotland and often regarded as a better quality spirit, compared to similar booze from somewhere else, like Ireland.

Single malt is often more expensive too because it is made from only one distillery, whereas blended whiskies mix two or more spirits and are sold as one.

A bottle of Bruichladdich Laddie 22 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky will set you back , so in terms of price, the Lidl tipple really is a good deal.

But when it comes to the taste, the jury is still out.

Lidl whisky expert, Tristan Stephenson, claims that the drink is typically smoky of a whisky this age.

He said: "Normally I wouldn't go near a whisky of this age in this price range, but this one is one of my favourites. It is particularly smoky and you can tell it's from the Islay region.

"For a single-malt scotch of this age you can expect to pay £70 to £80 for an average bottle, maybe £120 for a decent bottle. But this one is really good and it's one of my favourites."

Lidl's Ben Brakcen 22 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky will hit shops in time for the festive season and will be available in stores from October 26.

The budget supermarket chain first released their line of Ben Bracken scotch whiskies in time for Father's Day this year.

Each bottle starts at just £17.49 each.

A new line of Oktoberfest-theme booze has also hit the shelves at Lidl, with prices starting at just 59p.
