Millions of apples have been affected by unusually low temperatures earlier this year, which caused some of them to feature slight blemishes to their skins - with no effect on their taste.

Now Morrisons has added the "ugly" fruits to its wonky fruit and veg range, which also contains pears, courgettes and cauliflower, to help British farmers sell more apples.

The range was initially launched in 2015 in a bid to tackle food waste.

Morrisons wonky apples - that barely look different from its normal range - are 70p cheaper than its original Royal Gala apples, which cost £1.50 for a six.

It's also 45 cheaper than a pack of five Royal Gala apples at Lidl and Asda.

“Whenever bad weather damages fruit we’ll work with our growers to help them make the most of their crops. Our wonky apples might be a little ugly, but they will taste great,” Morrisons apple buyer, Mark Booth, said.

Earlier this year, Morrisons added asparagus to its wonky veg range, making it the cheapest on the market.

Morrisons sold 25,000 tonnes of wonky veg last year, according to trade magazine The Grocer.

VEGGIE CLEVER Morrisons launches £5 veg box that can feed a family of four for FIVE days

In September, the supermarket also launched a season veg box  that can keep the family full for a week for just a fiver.

Many of the high end veg boxes that are delivered to your door usually start at £13.75, so you're getting a good deal with the one from Morrisons.

Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Waitrose also have wonky veg lines.
