Asda is launching SIX festive wine magnums – but are they a good deal?
The supermarket has launched a range of six magnum bottles of popular tipples - which are twice the size of a regular bottle
WINE lovers are in for a treat this festive season as Asda has launched a range of magnum bottles of booze - and it's not just bubbly that gets the supersize treatment.
But not all of them are value for money, as a magnum of award-winning Châteauneuf Du Pape costs more than DOUBLE the price of a normal bottle of the booze.
At 1.5l, a magnum contains twice the amount of alcohol than a normal bottle of which typically contain 750ml.
So for double the alcohol, you'd at least expect to pay the same as two bottles of the stuff.
But in the new range from Asda, that's not the case for all of them.
A 750ml bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape is currently on offer at the supermarket for £10 down from £10.98, so for two bottles you'd hand over £20.
But a magnum of the stuff from Asda costs £24 - so you're actually paying £4 more for the novelty of a bigger bottle.
The other wines that have been given the supersize treatment is the Gran Colina Rioja, Mateus Rosé, DOT Malbec, Fillipo Sansovino Prosecco, Louvel Fontaine Champagne.
You will also be paying more for your booze if you buy the magnum of Fillipo Sansovino Prosecco for £14, because a normal size bottle actually cost £6.50 each from Asda.
The biggest saving you'll make on the bigger bottle is on the champagne, where you can save £4 on buy a magnum instead of two bottles.
A 750ml bottle of the Louvel Fontaine Champagne costs £18 whereas the magnum is on offer for £32, down from £35.
The red wine Gran Colina Rioja and the Mateus Rosé magnums cost £10 each, and their 750ml counterparts cost £5 each.
The same goes for the £32 magnum bottle of Louvel Fontaine Champagne which costs £18 for a normal size bottle.
LOVELY BUBBLY We reveal the cheapest (and most expensive) bottle of supermarket prosecco
A magnum of the Argentinian red, the DOT Malbec, will set you back £11. A normal size bottle of the same wine is on offer for £6.50 down from £7.98 at Asda, so you're actually saving yourself £2 when you buy the bigger bottle.
Whilst magnums are great for showing off at parties over the Christmas period, remember they're not always value for money.
Morrisons is also selling a giant bottle of prosecco that costs only a tenner.
Whilst a magnum is impressive, Aldi set the bar even higher in September when it started selling a bottle of Prosecco that was TWICE the size of a magnum.
The super-size bottle is called a jeroboam and holds 3l. It cost £39.99 a pop.
