Lidl wins supermarket Christmas dinner battle with a festive feast that costs £3.19 per person

The survey reveals the impact of the rising costs of inflation on the festive season with some supermarkets upping their prices by 13 per cent

LIDL has won the battle for the cheapest Christmas dinner this year, as the cost of the festive feast keeps rising.

Good Housekeeping tracked the price of 11 Christmas dinner essentials, including turkey, mince pies and cranberry sauce, across ten supermarkets.

It found that Lidl's basket costs just £25.53 for a family of eight, or £3.19 a head.

Last year's winner and rival Aldi came a close second in the survey, with its basket of goods costing £25.68.

At £2.50 more expensive, Iceland came in at third place.

The most expensive supermarket, which will come as no surprise to most, was posh retailer Waitrose with its Christmas dinner basket costing £41.47.

According to Good Housekeeping, this year our Christmas dinner basket will be the most expensive since the tracker began in 2009.

Nine supermarkets are more expensive than last year, with Aldi, Morrisons and Iceland all increasing their prices by over 13 per cent.

Surprisingly, the only supermarket whose basket has got cheaper is Marks & Spencer.

The posh supermarket was the most expensive last year with its Christmas dinner basket costing £49.40.

It has now dropped to £38.43 or over 20 per cent cheaper.

“Bargains are thin on the ground this Christmas, so supermarket choice is crucial,” said Caroline Bloor, Consumer Director, Good Housekeeping.

“A turkey will usually be your biggest outlay, so if you can find quality and value, you’ll be off to a great start. Lidl had the cheapest one this year. Now is not the time for loyalty – swapping supermarkets is the best way to save.”

That's nearly 50p more expensive than last year, according to the survey.

Ryan McDonnell from Lidl told the Sun Online that the supermarket is "extremely proud" to be awarded the best value Christmas dinner basket.

He said:"This recognition proves that customers don't need to dig too deep in their pockets for an impressive Christmas dinner for the whole family.

The Sun Online also reached out to Waitrose for comment.
