Ikea’s click-together furniture speeds up assembly time by 80 per cent

HAVE you ever spent what feels like an eternity putting together flat pack furniture? Well we have some good news.

Ikea is extending its range of snap together furniture and it could cut the assembly time by up to 80 per cent.

The Swedish firm launched furniture with "wedge dowel" fittings last year.

The fittings look a bit like a screw made out of timber which fits snugly into pre-drilled holes.

It's a click-fit system so you don't need any tools. Yes! The end of the Allen key is in sight.

Ikea says that it can cut assembly times by 50 to 80 per cent.

It is already used for the Eket small table, Regissor cabinets and Lisabo table and stool. In April it will also be available on its Platsa click-together wardrobes.

This month it will also start selling a new sofa system called Delaktig which comes in 25 parts and has an aluminum frame and tubular legs that click together, with only screws to hold it tight.

You can then customise the sofa by adding armrests, a lamp, table or new backrest covers.

Prices start at £55 for an armrest or £405 for a three seater sofa base.

It comes as the second of a three-part documentary airs about Ikea.

The programme, which is broadcast on BBC 2 tonight at 9pm, goes behind the scenes at the furniture giant on the anniversary year of it opening its first UK store.

Tonight's episode visits the home of the BILLY bookcase to see what it takes to be a supplier for Ikea. They also try to pitch for a new range of wardrobes.

Plus, one of Ikea's newest designers Hanna-Kaarina looks at the challenge of creating a new "imperfect vase" that has the finger marks of the creator.
