KFC ran out of chicken and the internet reacted with a crazed mixture of fear and fury.

Fried chicken lovers unable to get hold of their favourite meal created dozens of memes in response to the shortage.

It came after 720 branches across the UK closed when a new supplier caused a "hiccup".

Twitter immediately exploded with pictures and clips expressing the nation's shock that KFC was out of its staple item.

In a statement on its website KFC said it "won't compromise on quality" and that some restaurants have closed while others are opening a limited menu or shorter hours.
