Don’t miss out on haggling with our five tips on how to drive a hard bargain — plus how to claim your free fiver

MILLENNIALS are missing out on millions of pounds worth of savings each year by refusing to haggle.

Bartering can get you on average £427 a year off the cost of goods and services but just 16 per cent of us do it regularly, research out today reveals.

Baby boomers aged 55 and over are most likely to try for a discount — with a quarter doing this for almost every item they buy.

But only 12 per cent of youngsters give it a go.

Natasha Rachel Smith, from topcashback.co.uk, which ran the study, said: “Haggling can make you feel awkward, especially if you are not making a big purchase or are in a more informal setting such as
browsing at a market or on holiday.

“But given the huge savings you can make, it is well worth giving it a go.”

Here are five tips to become an expert haggler . . .

  1. It’s not just for stuff in shops. Consumers typically save £206 by haggling with suppliers each year, including over phone contracts, insurance, TV and broadband.
SAVE: £206 – enough for a Michael Kors designer handbag at Fashionette
  2. Seen something that you really like in store? Hagglers cut the cost of shopping by around £221 a year. Start by offering less than you know a product is worth, so you can meet in the middle at a price you are more willing to pay.
SAVE: £221 – enough for a Dorado faux-leather double bedframe at Bensons for Beds
  3. Check out the top haggle-friendly shops — they may not be those you would expect. Carphone Warehouse came top in a poll, followed by John Lewis, Tesco, Debenhams and DFS. Sainsbury’s, Asda and TK Maxx also routinely reduce prices if asked.
SAVE: Can be up to £100 on big-ticket items – enough for a weekly family food shop
  4. Remember you can haggle online. Start a chat with the pop-up virtual assistant or politely ask the store’s social media team if they can cut a deal.
SAVE: Discounts range between 12 and 20 per cent
  5. Follow the experts. Haggling veterans often recommend that you never take the first offer, pretend that you are ready to walk away if the price is not right then ask the store to throw in something extra or free delivery if you cannot get the cost down.
SAVE: Top hagglers can make more than £1,000 a year back – enough for a sunshine break for two
