Mars set to make flat Maltesers in the shape of buttons in a bid to ‘fight falling sales’
Chocolate giants' plans for new flat style Maltesers have been leaked and it's not clear if it will be a permanent change in response to the sugar tax
CHOCOLATE maker Mars is to change the shape of Maltesers from balls to buttons.
The honeycomb-filled sweets are being given a redesign to fight falling sales, it is claimed.
Details were leaked during preparations for a new online advert.
A source invited to the audition said: “We were told the Maltesers we would be holding would be flat — like a Minstrel.
"We were not given the chocolate but it was described to us.
“The part involved pretending to be a bunch of mates at work having a bit of banter while eating Maltesers.
“We got on with it, but none of us thought flat Maltesers were a good idea.
"I imagine some people will be upset.”
It is not clear if the buttons will be a one-off or a permanent change in response to the sugar tax being introduced on April 6.
Maltesers were named as the UK’s favourite chocolate in 2015.
But last year sales slumped by 7.6 per cent as Brits switched to healthier alternatives.
Asked if Maltesers will be flattened, Mars teased: “That’s not a bad idea.”
