MORRISONS has unveiled a new value range with prices starting at just 20p - but how does it stack up against other supermarkets?

The supermarket's Savers range launched on 250 basic products and they are already available online and in stores.

The price drop includes everything from everyday items like a white loaf of bread to Jaffa Cakes, which cost 30p for a pack of 12.

One of the cheapest products we found was a 500g pack of spaghetti available for 20p.

Washing products like laundry liquid and dishwater tablets are also included in the range.

We compared a few of these items to similar products at Tesco and Asda but also budget retailers Lidl and Aldi, using prices from

At Asda the treats will cost you 31p for a pack of 12 - just 1p more than at Morrisons.

Morrisons' white sliced bread, which costs 36p for a 720g loaf is also the best value.

Although, Lidl is selling a 800g loaf for 40p - so you'll get more bread for only 4p more.

Asda beat Morrisons when it comes to cleaning products with its Smartprice Bio Washing Power priced at £2.36 compared to £2.78 at Morrisons for a nearly identical weight.

Tesco's Everyday Value and Asda's Smartprice dishwasher tablets are also cheaper.

Supermarkets tend to sell four brand types.

HOW TO GET THE CHEAPEST GROCERY SHOP

HERE are some tips to cut your grocery shop

  • Compare prices using mysupermarket.com to see the cheapest supermarket based on the items in your basket.
  • It will also suggest items that you can "downshift" to own-brand items from branded names to save even more money.
  • For more expensive items, such as toilet roll and washing powder, you can find the cheapest price and decide whether to make a special trip to a shop for the lowest price.
  • Don't forget to check for vouchers and discount codes - and save even more cash by using them to get money off your shopping.

From cheapest to most expensive, these are: value, standard (the supermarket own-brand), branded products (for example, Cadbury or Heinz) and premium supermarket brands like Tesco's Finest.

MoneySavingExpert's encourages shoppers to drop one brand level on everything and see if you can tell the difference.

If you can't, stick with the cheaper product.

MSE estimates that by downshifting each product by one brand level you could cut 33 per cent a year off your shopping bill.

That's about £1,700 a year on a typical £100 weekly grocery shop.

It's also worth noting that many household brands also produce cheaper unbranded items for supermarkets.

Last year we exposed how Hula Hoops and Aldi’s Snackrite Hoops are both made by KP Snacks.

A Sun investigation also revealed that household brands such as McVitie’s, Muller, Pataks and Andrex also produce unbranded items for our supermarkets.

Supermarket comparison site  includes a '"trade down" option based on this theory.

So when you enter your shopping trolley, as well as comparing the price of all your items across online supermarkets, it gives you the downshifted option too.
