MOTHERCARE is recalling a children's toy key set over fears that its battery holder could fall off.

The retailer has issued the recall over its "my first key" toy which has been sold in shops and on its website since June last year.

According to the recall, there is a risk that the battery compartment on the toy could come off, leaving the button cell battery exposed.

Only toys with a batch code of 02-161024, 02161205 and 02-170509 are affected by the recall and parents are being urged to stop using them immediately and return it to the store they bought it from for a full refund.

The code can be found on the back of the toy, so parents should check to see if their item is affected.

Mothercare said: "This action has been taken to ensure the safety and well-being of our customers and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."

Worried parents can also  contact the shop by emailing [email protected].

Yesterday, it was reported that Mothercare is considering closing up to a third of its stores as it struggles to survive on the high street.

The chain has 143 stores in the UK but is hoping to enter a Company Voluntary Agreement (CVA) to cut its costs.

This will allow it to pay off its debts over a fixed period of time.
