ROYAL WEDDING'S are a great excuse to go out and buy limited edition cups, coins, plates and novelty tea towels - but could that tat turn into a money spinner?

Ahead of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding on Saturday we take a look at the memorabilia from previous royal nuptials that are sought after by collectors.

We have already seen commemorative coins from the Royal Mint and Argos is even selling a £15 version of Meghan's engagement ring.

But, if you really want to earn some money from your royal purchase you need to look for the higher end or more personal items that really hold their value.

Speaking to The Sun, antiques expert and TV presenter Tracy Martin said: "It is only the items from famous designers or have a personal connection to the royal family that are really worth investing in."

We decided to look at some of the memorabilia from past royal weddings and see how much it is all worth now.

A loving cup is a mug with two handles that newly weds are meant to hold together and drink from so that they can share their first sip of wine as a married couple.

This loving cup was made by the Royal Collection to commemorate Prince William's and Kate Middleton's wedding in 2011.

Part of the reason the expense of this two handed mug is that it gilded in gold and platinum before being covered again in gold.

This regal looking mug just last last week.

Antiques expert says that it is only worth collection royal wedding memorabilia if you really love it

TRACY Martin has been in the antiques industry for 20 years and has appeared on TV shows such as BBC's The One Show and Flog It as well as being the antiques and collectables Expert for ITV's This Morning. She has also written six books on antiques and written for several national newspapers.

What not to buy: Souvenirs won't really hold their value. There is just too many of them out there to be of interest to collectors. You need to look for something a bit more special.

A personal connection: The one thing that usually makes these antiques collectable is a personal collection to the royal family. Something actually from the wedding reception could be really valuable. I know that a piece of Charles and Diana's wedding cake sold for £1,000 recently. I wouldn't be suprised if a slice of cake from Harry and Meghan's wedding reception goes on sale too.

Buy from designers: Collectors will always be after pieces made by designers like Emma Bridgewater and Wedgewood. These will remain collectible just because of who made them and the history behind those brands. The fact that these pieces might be related to the royal wedding isn't that important, it's who made it that counts.

Royal mint coins: If you have deep pockets the Royal Mint's royal wedding coins come at a price of £1,980 for the £5 gold proof coins. These over time do become desirable with collectors who are prepared to pay more in future as only 850 were minted. But only the gold coins hold their value, not the silver ones.

What about Meghan and Harry's wedding?: Probably the only item that will hold it's value from this royal wedding is the limited edition items made by St Georges Chapel, where the Harry and Meghan are getting married. In particular there is a limited edition mug made by the chapel of which there were only around 250 produced. These will probably become collectible, but will most likely sell out before the wedding.

So is it worth collecting royal memorabilia?: My advice to anyone buying royal wedding memorabilia would be to buy it because you love it. When you are buying royal wedding memorabilia you are purchasing a memento to keep as a memory of the day. It is not really an investment piece so just buy it if you really love it.

Wrongly dated Charles and Camilla cups - £30

From looking around eBay it seems that mugs, plates and the kind of things that people usually buy to commemorate a royal wedding don't hold their value.

Unless the mug or plate that you bought is printed with a mistake.

Charles and Camilla had to postpone their wedding due to the death of the pope.

But, memorabilia was already printed before the date was changed.

A mug with the old the date last month.
