Venison burgers sold at Asda recalled over allergy fears

VENISON burgers sold at Asda have been pulled from shelves over fears they could cause an allergic reaction.

The retailer is advising that customers do not eat the Wild Venison Burgers from Yorkshire Game 17 because the packets fail to declare that they contain wheat, soya and sulphur dioxide.

This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to gluten, soya or a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide.

Sulphites, including sulphur dioxide, are basically food preservatives used to prevent browning or discoloration of food. In extreme cases an allergic reaction can cause your blood pressure to drop and your airways to close.

Meanwhile, coeliac disease is an autoimmune digestive condition where the intestines react to gluten and become inflamed.

Affected packets have a use-by date up to and including May 13 and a batch code of 12318. If you have one that you think is affected you should return it to the store from where it was bought in exchange for a full refund.

In the recall notice posted on the Food Standards Agency website, the retailer said: "Yorkshire Game 17 Ltd is recalling the above product from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall."

"The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product."

No other products from the wild game and venison supplier are known to be affected.

An investigation by the Sun Online found that food recalls have gone up by 44 per cent in three years.
