Morrisons to start selling ‘wonky’ flowers as hot weather means some blooms haven’t developed properly – and they’re cheaper too

MORRISONS is to start selling wonky flowers to stop imperfect blooms from going to waste - and they're cheaper too.
The current hot weather and dry conditions mean some flowers haven't developed properly.
The wonky blooms have shorter than normal stems and smaller flower heads due to the lack rain over the last few weeks.
Now, instead of throwing them away, Morrisons will start selling the flowers for a discounted £3 per bouquet instead of £5.
The first wonky bouquet will be British sunflowers and statice, which is also known as sea lavender and has a spray of small pink or lilac funnel-shaped flowers.
Drew Kirk, from Morrisons, said: “It would be a shame to see these beautiful stems go to waste just because they’re a few centimetres too short.
"Our wonky range helps growers and farmers reduce waste and at the same time helps customers to afford to buy flowers more often."
The flowers are the latest wonky product to hit Morrisons' shelves.
The already stock wonky fruit and veg, which might not grow perfectly because of weather conditions.
Products are selected from farmers’ crops because they are mis-shapen, have skin blemishes or growth cracks, or are much smaller or larger than average.
Earlier this year, the supermarket added asparagus to its wonky veg range, making it the cheapest on the market.
It then launched "ugly" apples in November - and the grocer is selling a whole pack of five for just 80p.
This year, Morrisons is planning to increase increase the number of seasonal wonky lines to 33 - including versions of exotic fruit and veg, like avocado.
Despite its effort to reduce the amount of veg that get unnecessarily binned, shoppers slammed the supermarket for its wasteful wrapping earlier this year after it covered the waste reducing wonky veg range in plastic.
Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Waitrose also have wonky veg lines.
