According to , a normal kettle uses 3kW of electricity, boiling a single cup of tea costs less than a penny and the amount of energy required to make a cup of tea is around 0.0408kWh.
The formula is as follows: cost = power (kilowatt) x cost of one kWh (pence) x time (months or over a year.), meaning 0.0408kWh x £0.172/kWh (average) which makes 0.7p.
How to descale a kettle
If you want to descale your kettle, you can follow these easy steps:
- Combine equal parts white vinegar and tap water in a measuring cup.
- Fill the kettle with the mixture until it's about three-quarters full.
- Bring to a boil, then remove from the heat and set aside to cool fully.
- Drain the water and wash multiple times, removing any stray flakes with a long-handled scrubbing brush if required.
- Finally, to eliminate any residues of vinegar, fill your kettle with clean water, boil it, then drain it a few times. Done!
