Asda recalls Frozen Smooth Mashed Potato because it may contain gluten
The family staple has been recalled by the supermarket after potential health risks were identified following the discovery of potato croquettes in some packets which contain wheat
FROZEN mashed potato on sale at Asda is being urgently recalled because some packs incorrectly contain potato croquettes, which have gluten in them.
The supermarket is asking people to return its own brand mash to stores as the croquettes could trigger allergic or intolerance reactions.
The Belgium made product - which costs 95p for a 900g pack - does not list gluten as an ingredient.
But gluten can trigger symptoms in people with coeliac disease or a wheat allergy.
People with coeliac disease may get diarrhoea, stomach pain, indigestion or constipation, while those with an allergy might start to sneeze, itch or start wheezing.
Some severe forms of the allergy can also result in anaphylactic shock, which can be life threatening.
The packaging states the mash contains potatoes, whole milk, rice flour, unsalted butter, salt, palm oil, milk protein and ground pepper extract.
A statement from ASDA said: “We are recalling Asda Frozen Smooth Mashed Potato with a date code of 31/05/2019 and lot code 18151 because a small number of packs may incorrectly contain potato croquettes instead of mashed potato.
“Potato croquettes contain gluten which is not labelled on the packaging.
"No other products or date codes are affected.
“Please bring it back to your nearest store where you will be given a full refund. You do not need your receipt.
“We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused and will ensure this doesn't happen again.”
