AFTER years of beating off replies meant for John Lewis department store, Twitter legend, John Lewis has finally got his own Christmas advert.

Twitter has released its first ever festive ad featuring the long-suffering American lecturer who shares his name with the retailer, and who is often mistaken for the department store on the social media site.

John signed up to Twitter back in 2007 with the handle @JohnLewis and spends his time replying to customers who mistakenly tag him in tweets intended for the chain, which tweets from @JLandPartners.

Last year, John received around 50,000 tweets intended for the store and his tongue-in-cheek responses has earned him a cult following of more than 42 thousand followers.

Now, the father-of-four from Virginia features in his very own Christmas ad for Twitter which follows his annual ritual of replying to messages about the John Lewis Christmas advert, this year starring Sir Elton John.

It starts off with John sat at his laptop at home, replying to customer enquiries like: "Not afraid to admit it @johnlewis makes me feel like Christmas has arrived.";

John tweets back: "@thatjonesy85 Don't tell my kids, it's not even #Thanksgiving yet".

Another ping and a second tweet appears: "@johnlewis Does Glasgow have this dress in stock? Need it for work party tonight".

Swivelling away from his desk, John inspects his whiteboard that features translations from English to America, like "trainers" and "sneakers", and "trousers" and "pants".

He points to a list titled "That dress (stock levels)" before stopping at Glasgow which has a smiley face next to it.

He replies: "@dancefloorgal Sure does... but did my invite get lost in the mail?"

All the while, a teen is standing in the corner playing an acoustic version of Christmas carol, In the Bleak Midwinter, in a nod to the often sentimental theme of the retailer's adverts.

Fans have spotted the room littered with toys from previous John Lewis festive ads too like the telescope, a miniature moon ornament, Monty the Penguin and Buster the Boxer.

As the film fades to black, the social media site's slogan reads: "This Christmas. Join the conversation. Even if it's by mistake."

Two years ago, John was sent a hamper from the department store after once again politely tolerating another year of Twitter feedback on the release of the Christmas trailer.

John said: "I think it's hilarious that people mistake me for the UK store and I do my best to direct them to the right place."

He added: "Hopefully people will be kind about my acting skills, I am no Elton John but who knows maybe I'll get Tweets about my own film this year."

John Lewis isn't the only retailer to released their festive ad - here's where you can watch all of the Christmas 2018 adverts, including ones from Tesco, Aldi, Argos and Amazon.

This year's John Lewis Christmas advert left some fans less than impressed, but TV viewers saw the John Lewis Christmas advert mocked last night— by Waitrose.

Viewers have hit out at the campaign starring Elton John for not being "Christmassy enough".
