PUMP WARS

Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco cut fuel by up to 2p per litre in new supermarket pump price war

ASDA has sparked a supermarket petrol price pump war after cutting prices at its 319 forecourts this morning, with Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco quickly following suit

ASDA has sparked a supermarket petrol price pump war after dropping prices at its 319 forecourts this morning.

The retailer has cut 1p a litre off unleaded and 2p a litre off diesel following a further fall in wholesale costs - the price supermarkets pay for fuel.

As Asda has a national fuel price cap, the move means drivers will pay no more than 118.7p a litre for unleaded and 129.7p a litre for diesel.

The supermarket says it's the first time in three months that diesel has fallen below the £1.30 price barrier.

Earlier this month, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco cut fuel prices by 3p per litre.

And Morrisons has been hot on Asda's heels today. It will cut the cost of unleaded by 1p a litre and diesel by up to 2p a litre at all of its 335 filling stations from tomorrow.

Three ways to cut your fuel costs

HERE are three ways to drive down your fuel costs:

  1. Make your car more fuel-efficient. You can do this by keeping your tyres inflated, taking the roof rack off, emptying your car of clutter and turning off your air con when driving at lower speeds.
  2. Find the cheapest fuel prices. Use PetrolPrices.com. All you need to do is enter your postcode and tell it how far you want to travel (up to 20 miles).
  3. Drive more efficiently. Some ways to do this, include:
  • Accelerate gradually without over-revving
  • Always drive on the highest possible gear
  • If you can, allow your car to slow down naturally as your brake is a money burner
  • Re-starting your car is expensive, if you can, keep moving

While Sainsbury’s will also drop the price of unleaded petrol by 1p a litre and diesel by up to 2p a litre across its 313 forecourts from tomorrow.

Tesco is also joining in, cutting unleaded by 1p a litre and diesel by up to 2p a litre at all of its 500 petrol filling stations by 5pm this evening.

Average petrol prices now stand at 126.8p a litre for unleaded and 135.6p a litre for diesel, according to petrol price comparison website PetrolPrices.com.

This year's Budget saw a boost for motorists as the Chancellor scrapped a 2p a litre fuel duty rise.

The move was a huge victory for The Sun’s long-running Keep It Down campaign — and for our readers.
