FREDDY STEADY GO

Freddo chocolate bars hop back to 10p at Tesco as nation demands 1994 price is restored – but it’s only for a week

TESCO has answered fans’ prayers and has slashed the price of a Cadbury Freddo to its original price of 10p.

Chocolate lovers have been so angry about the soaring cost of the frog-shaped chocolate treats that they’ve even held protests in the past – so a lot of people will be very “hoppy” at the news.

Freddo hops back to its 1994 relaunch price of 10p after a national campaign – but only for a week

The bite-size 18g Dairy Milk bars cost 25p these days – something that has infuriated Freddo fiends over the years.

Last year, it was revealed that the treats have soared in price by 2,000 per cent since the year 2,000 – more than any other food.

Cadbury quickly lowered the price from 30p back down to 25p soon after to appease angry chocolate lovers.

But some are still incensed that the bars no longer cost 10p as they did when they re-launched in the UK back in 1994.

For years, Freddo fans have been urging Cadbury to make the chocolate treats 10p again – and now Tesco has answered their prayers

Now Tesco will thrill fanatics with its 10p Freddo offer – but the joy will be temporary as the deal only runs until Sunday.

They will be available online and in stores nationwide.

The offer starts today on what’s known as Blue Monday, which is said to be the most depressing day of the year.

A spokesman said Tesco hopes the deal will cheer up gloomy shoppers.

After the deal ends, you could always console yourself with a new Freddo treat called Treasures – which is basically like a Kinder Surprise.

A timeline of the rising cost of a Freddo

HERE is how much a Freddo has risen in price by since 1994:

1994 – Freddo re-launches in the UK priced at 10p

2007 – The price is hiked for the first time in 13 years to 15p

2010 – Another price hike: this time to 17p

2011 – Just one year later, the price creeps up to 20p

2014 – Fans are incensed when the cost rises again to 25p a bar

2017 – There is widespread outrage when Freddos become 30p

2018 – Cadbury slashes the price to appease fans and a bar costs 25p again

The offer is part of a larger deal Tesco is running to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

Called the supermarket has rolled back prices on dozens of items, including Cathedral City cheddar and Magnum ice creams.

Tesco’s chief customer officer, Alessandra Bellini, said: “We understand that the nation wanted to see the price of the iconic Freddo chocolate bars return to the original price of 10p.

“Given we are celebrating 100 years of great value, we’re really pleased to have been able to give our customers what they want, and have some fun at the same time.”

The cost of a Freddo bar is often used as an unofficial benchmark to track the price of consumer goods.

Whenever the cost goes up, fans are outraged.
