M&S has been accused of killing Percy Pig — by sneakily turning all versions of the sweets vegetarian.

It has stripped the treats of gelatine, and fans say they now taste like washing-up liquid.

They accused the store of pandering to veggies and declared: “Bring back Percy.”

Cabbie David Sheehan, 52, fumed: “Percy Pigs tasted fine before. Why did they change them for the veggie brigade?”

M&S launched a Veggie Percy In 2011, which was free from animal product gelatine, but still kept the originals for meat-lovers.

However after tweaks the veggie recipe has been quietly rolled out as standard, with the store claiming the flavour is the same.

But Laura Knowles posted: “They are NOT THE SAME!!! Not even nearly. Even my five-year-old was not fooled.”

Matt Jackson asked the high street store: “Why do your Percy Pigs taste like washing-up liquid and have such a strange texture? Really disappointed as they’re basically inedible.”

Richard Brackstone added: “Quite frankly they’re now disgusting. They taste like chemicals. Bring back Percy! Save Percy Pig!”

The sweets, introduced in 1992, are one of M&S’s most popular products, with a Facebook appreciation society boasting 250,000 members.

M&S said: “After a lot of hard work — and tasting — we’ve finally perfected a 100 per cent vegetarian Percy, something our customers have been asking us for, for a while!”

They insisted: “Percy is as close to the original as possible. We haven’t changed any of the really important things that people love about Percy. The flavour is the same.”

They were backed by student Jack Hayden, 20, from Poplar, East London, who said: “I can’t tell the difference. If it helps to save the environment then I’m all for it.”
