Supermarkets cut fuel prices by up to 3p per litre due to ‘falling wholesale costs’

ASDA, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Morrisons have cut the cost of petrol and diesel by up to 3p per litre due to a drop in wholesale fuel prices.

It means that drivers across the country will pay no more than 128.7p per litre on diesel and 126.7 per litre on unleaded at Asda.

Sainsbury's, Tesco and Morrisons won't confirm exact prices as they vary depending on where you fill-up.

Asda was the first supermarket to announce that is has slashed prices and it's expected that others are likely to do the same.

Motorists will be able to take advantage of the price drop at Asda, Tesco and Morrisons pumps from tomorrow June 6, and June 7 at Sainsbury's.

Wholesale costs have fallen over the past fortnight, according to the AA, but pump prices are yet to reflect it.

Luke Bosdet, the AA’s fuel price spokesman said that "it's not fair" that families on low incomes are the hardest hit by inflated costs.

Ways to cut down on your fuel costs

HERE are some tips on how you can slash the cost of fuel

  1. Make your car more fuel-efficient. You can do this by keeping your tyres inflated, taking the roof rack off, emptying your car of clutter and turning off your air con when driving at lower speeds.
  2. Find the cheapest fuel prices. PetrolPrices.com and Confused.com allows you to search prices of UK petrol stations. All you need to do is enter in your postcode and tell it how far you want to travel (up to 20 miles).
  3. Drive more efficiently. Some ways to do this, include:
  • Accelerate gradually without over-revving
  • Always drive on the highest possible gear
  • If you can, allow your car to slow down naturally as your brake is a money burner
  • Re-starting your car is expensive, if you can keep moving

He added: "UK drivers have been thrown around on a year-long pump price rollercoaster that has added 10p a litre, taken it off and then put it back on again.

"Families with cars react badly to price shocks, but worse still when falling wholesale prices aren’t reflected at the pump."

UK drivers have been hit with price hikes on fuel for four months in a row making petrol 11p a litre more expensive compared to February and diesel 7p pricier on average.

In April, they rocketed by 5p a litre - the largest increase in 19 years.

Asda is dropping fuel prices across all 322 of it's filling up stations - you can find your nearest one .

Morrisons has 335 stations and you can find where your local is .

The supermarket's senior fuel buyer, Dave Tyrer, called the cut in costs a "welcomed boost".

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said that the price cuts aren't enough to reflect the "dramatic" drop in wholesale costs.

He said: "We would very much like to see retailers reflect wholesale price reductions more closely.

"This is particularly the case with diesel which has been a similar price to petrol on the wholesale market for some time, yet is still 5p a litre more expensive on average on the forecourt."

He added: "We should really see more in the next week or so."

Yesterday, we reported how shoppers can save Morrisons can nab 5p off fuel until Sunday when they spend £40 in store.

The cost to fill up your car varies wildly across the UK and motorists in the South East are the worst off.

Drivers in the area have to fork out a whopping 131.41p per litre of petrol and 136.46p per litre of diesel, compared to Northern Ireland where it costs 129.68p per litre of petrol and 132.56p per litre of diesel, according to data from RAC Fuel Watch.
