Poundland trials new range costing from 50p to £4

DISCOUNT retailer Poundland has announced plans to stock certain items in stores for less than its famous £1 selling price - but it is adding other items at higher prices.

The retailer is trialling a pricing shake-up that will see selected items for 50p, 75p, £1.50, £3 and £4 - although it says 75 per cent of stock will still cost £1.

Until now, Poundland has only discounted products below £1 in its post-Christmas sale and as part of its "manager's specials".

In 2017, however, it did trial selling items for more than £1 at £2 and £5.

Items that will be priced at 50p include an Oats to Go Breakfast Pot, a 75g pot of Princes Sardine & Tomato Paste, as well as 100ml Colgate Cavity Protect Toothpaste.

While products, such as Pampers Babywipes (a 52 pack), will cost customers 75p.

Here's how to cut the cost of your grocery shop

SAVING on your shop can make a big difference to your wallet. Here are some tips from Hannah Maundrell, editor of Money.co.uk, about how you can cut the cost of your shopping bills:

  • Write yourself a list – Only buy items that you need. If it isn’t on your list, don’t put it in the trolley
  • Create a budget – Work out a weekly budget for your food shopping
  • Never shop hungry – you are far more likely to buy  more food if your tummy is rumbling
  • Don’t buy pre-chopped veggies or fruit – The extra they’ll charge for chopping can be eye watering
  • Use social media – follow your favourite retailers to find out about the latest deals
  • Be disloyal – You may want to go to different stores to find the best bargains
  • Check the small print –  It’s always worth checking the price per kg/lb/litre when comparing offers so you’re making a like for like decision as a bigger box won’t necessarily mean you get more
  • Use your loyalty cards – Don’t be afraid to sign up to them all. They all work slightly differently – work out what bonus suits you better and remember to trade in your points for additional rewards

Aussie shampoo, meanwhile will be priced £3, as will John West tuna.

At the pricier end of the range is a 50ml Nivea Anti-Wrinkle Night Cream for £4.

But while £4 sounds a lot, Superdrug is currently selling Nivea Q10 Power Anti-Wrinkle and Firming Night Cream (50ml) on offer for £5.35.

You won't be able to bag the bargains everywhere though as this is only a pilot across 24 of Poundland's stores in the Midlands.

Park Street in Walsall is the first to receive the new price range, although Poundland wouldn't tell The Sun where the remaining 23 stores are, only saying these will be announced in the near future.

Poundland also wouldn't confirm how long it experts the trial to last.

Barry Williams, managing director of Poundland, said: "While three quarters of the products we offer will still be £1, it's important we look to broaden our ranges elsewhere, whether above or below £1.

"Our customers are among the savviest in the country. We know that and it's why we're moving at the pace they dictate to become the simple price retailer they want us to be."

Poundland bosses hinted last year that prices could rise by as much as £7 a pop as struggling competitor Poundworld collapsed closing 355 stores last year.

But Mr Williams believes Poundland stores will still offer value for money.
