CADBURY has been slammed for its new multi-flavour “Unity” chocolate bar aimed at celebrating ethnic diversity for trivialising racism.
The new bar features four different flavours of chocolate to represent a range of skin colours.
While on the package there’s several people from different cultural backgrounds all holding hands.
It’s been described by Cadbury as “the first bar with dark, blended, milk and white, united in one bar”.
Announcing the new product, Cadbury wrote: “This Independence Day, let's celebrate a country that stands united in its diversity."
The limited edition bar is being sold in India and was rolled out earlier this month as part of the country’s Independence Day on August 15.
But the announcement of the "Unity" bar soon outraged some chocolate fans with thousands criticising the firm for making light of a serious issue.
Tejal Rao, a columnist, wrote: "Congratulations to Cadbury for solving racism."
While business student Aaron Burke sarcastically said: "Cadbury ending racism one chocolate bar at a time..."
Legal analyst Imani Gandy compared the gaffe to Pepsi advertising campaign featuring Kendall Jenner turning up to a protest and handing a cop a can of soda.
She tweeted: "This is as absurd as Kendall Jenner fighting police brutality with a Pepsi."
Lots of people also referenced India's caste system, though declining still plays a part in widespread social segregation.
Many also responded to the Cadbury's social media post referencing the oppression ongoing in Kashmir.
Cadbury started importing chocolate to India in 1948, a year after independence from the British Empire.
Although, a handful of people praised the chocolate giant for trying to spread the message of diversity.
One said: "Brilliant idea and message. Please distribute across the world."
The Sun has contacted Cadbury for a comment.
Global advertising agency Ogilvy, who worked with Cadbury to release the product, told : “India is a diverse country, with people of different castes, creed, languages, regions, religions.
“Everyone living together, but not always with love. Cadbury Dairy Milk, which is loved by everyone, wanted to send a powerful message of unity.”
