HSBC and Tesco Bank glitch locked customers out of app and phone banking

HUNDREDS of HSBC and Tesco Bank customers were locked out of apps and online banking this morning.

The outage comes just days after numerous problems with NatWest's website this week.

On website DownDetector, there were 436 reports of problems with HSBC this morning with key issues being internet banking (64 per cent) and mobile banking (35 per cent).

Reports mostly originated around London, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Coventry, Nottingham, Sheffield, and Norwich.

When it comes to Tesco Bank, there were 137 reports of issues with key problems again centring on online banking (65 per cent), mobile banking (33 per cent), and the website (1 per cent).

Problems stemmed around London, Glasgow, Manchester, Bristol, Nottingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Norwich, Leeds, and Southampton.

But both banks have confirmed that the issues are now fixed.

A HSBC spokesperson said: “Our online and mobile banking services are now available again. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

While Tesco Bank has tweeted: "Following issues this morning, our online banking, mobile banking app and Your Insurance Account are back up and running. Thanks for your patience while we fixed this."

Annoyed customer had expressed their anger about the outage on social media.

One HSBC customer tweeted: "Can you put a message on the front screen of your online banking service that it's down as I've wasted some password attempts now as I was unaware. Why don't you do this?"

Another wrote: "@HSBC_UK is your app and online banking down? I can’t seem to log into either..."

Someone else added: "@HSBC_UK is the system down? As I’m struggling to sign into my account online or using the app."

Meanwhile, one frustrated Tesco Bank user tweeted: @TescoBankNewsdown again what a joke! Not ideal on pay day AND Tesco Bank goes down weekly! Seriously annoyed! I will be changing banks for sure!"

Nationwide also confirmed to The Sun that it experienced an online outage for a few minutes this morning but it says the problem is now resolved.

It couldn't tell us how many customers were affected but said it was a small number.

There were just 22 reports of problems with the building society this morning, with 66 per cent for mobile banking, 25 per cent for internet banking and 8 per cent for payment cards.

A Nationwide customer tweeted: "Gone to use the app again today and not working at all, same issue."

If you still want to give HSBC the benefit of the doubt it will pay you £175 if you switch to its current account.

HSBC and Tesco Bank aren't the only banks to experience technical glitches.

TSB customers were locked out of accounts earlier this month after online and mobile banking went down.
