But if you want to get your hands on this slice of history you'll need deep pockets, as the asking price is £3.25million.

It was the brainchild of architect Brian Housden, who was inspired by the pioneering European modernism movement and lived there with his family until his death in 2014.

Glass bricks across most of the back of the house let in light and curtains weave through the property to divide the open-plan living space.

Industrial-looking exposed pipes and electrical wiring are juxtaposed with bold colours and unique built-in furniture.

The Grade II-listed house in Hampstead, North London, has 2,128 sq ft of accommodation with an office/study, a large open plan living area and kitchen, four bedrooms and four bathrooms.

Outside it has a patio garden and access to the flat roof.

Housden, his wife and their three daughters moved into the uncompleted house in 1964 with a stand pipe in the kitchen and a temporary toilet.

The house was structurally complete by 1966 but much of the embellishments were completed over the following years when Housden could afford to.

Daughter, Tess Housden, said: "My father didn’t have a lot of money while he was building it, so the build started and stopped all the time. Slowly doors, shelving and cabinets were added over a period of years.

“It took a long time, and it was definitely a labour of love.

"When we first moved here, when I was a baby, we slept in camp beds under the stairs.

"I’ll miss the space and the view. It was great growing up next to the Heath.

"We’ve had great parties here. The space is perfect for entertaining."

A spokesman for estate agents The Modern House said: "The house is in fascinatingly original condition, having been lovingly maintained by the Housden family throughout its history.

"It is one of the great post-war modern houses in London.”
