Lidl’s vodka wins gold at the 2017 Drink Awards – and it’s £20 cheaper than Grey Goose

A cut-price vodka from Lidl has scooped the first prize at a prestigious industry awards.

That's £20 cheaper than the standard £34 you would pay for a 70cl bottle of Grey Goose.

And it’s even a £25 saving when compared to .

Lidl’s Ignis Vodka also took the lead over second place-winning Russian Standard Platinum that sells.

The Grocer Drink Awards is known for its rigorous two-step judging process with a consumer panel.

The judges praised the award-winning vodka for its "depth of smell and taste”, with "hints of citrus, a little sweetness and complex aftertaste".

They also complimented its packaging and felt that it offered high quality at good price.

Paul McQuade, from Lidl, said the supermarket was extremely pleased to receive The Grocer's recognition for its premium Ignis Vodka.

He said: "We’re constantly looking to offer high-quality, premium spirits for our customers that don’t come with a premium price tag.

"Using quality ingredients and attention to detail is at the heart of what we do, as shown in our Ignis French Grain Vodka."

The budget supermarket and its rival Aldi have gained popularity for stocking up top wines at a budget price.

A bottle of sparkling wine from Lidl that sells for £7.99 was ranked among the best after picking up the same award as nearly 40 Champagnes costing over six times the price.

A £10 Aldi wine was awarded a Gold prize by Decanter – one of the world’s most respected drink competitions - this summer.

Earlier this year, Aldi’s Exquisite Collection Côtes De Provence 2016 rosé also won the silver medal at The International Wine Challenge.
