Will E10 petrol cost more than regular fuel?

A NEW greener petrol grade is coming to the UK in September.

E10, which contains up to 10 per cent renewable ethanol to help tackle climate change, will replace E5 for most drivers.

Will E10 fuel cost more than regular petrol?

The cost of E10 fuel itself will not be any more expensive, but it will drive up the cost of filling up for people with cars that are not compatible with it.

This is because motorists will have to opt for premium E5 petrol on the forecourt.

This could add up to £6.11 to the cost of a tank of fuel for more than half a million car owners.

E5 premium fuel may also be harder to find in rural locations, the RAC has warned.

When will E10 fuel be introduced?

E10 fuel is officially being introduced in Britain from September 2021.

But the roll-out will be slow, so not all petrol stations will have it available straight away.

Northern Ireland is set to get it in early 2022.

Is E10 fuel better for the environment?

There has been some debate about how much better E10 fuel is for the environment, but generally it is thought of as better than E5.

It contains up to 10 per cent renewable ethanol, which will help to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with petrol vehicles.

CO2 is one of the greenhouse gases that contributes to climate change and blending petrol with renewable ethanol means less fossil fuel is needed.

The government has estimated that the introduction of E10 could see transport CO2 emissions cut by 750,000 tonnes a year - the equivalent of taking 350,000 cars off the road, or all the cars in North Yorkshire.

However, it will have little impact on emissions associated with air quality and public health, experts have said.

E10 is already widely used around the world, including across Europe, the US and Australia.
