Can I get fined for not having any windscreen washer fluid?
It is illegal to drive without washer fluid, and you might be fined if you get caught driving without.
Drivers are legally required to have washer fluid and working wipers to ensure you have a clear view of the road at all times.
Failing to have washer fluid in your motor is an offence under the 1986 Road Vehicles Regulations as it is deemed unsafe and classed as an MOT failure.
Likewise, if your windscreen becomes dirty, you would also be violating the 1988 Road Traffic Act.

You could be pulled over by the police, and in serious cases (if you had a crash for example) it could even land you in court.
If you find yourself in the dock, you could be ordered to pay up to £2,500 and even given a driving ban.
If you’re in an accident caused by restricted vision and you're caught without washer fluid, sentences might be harsher as it'll be deemed your fault.
You could be charged with careless driving and receive a fine of £100 and potentially receive three points on your licence.

To avoid running out of washer fluid, you can check it every couple of weeks or even try using screen wash tablets that can be added to water to create a screen wash solution.

How often should I check my windscreen washer fluid?
It's recommended to check your car windscreen fluid at least once a month and top it up if necessary.
But you might need to check more regularly during the winter season or periods of increased driving, depending on how often you use it.
If your windscreen fluid container is less than a quarter empty, make sure to fill it up as you never know when you'll need to use it.
You can top up your washer container with a blend of water and a concentrated screen wash solution to help keep it clean - usually available from any store stocking car accessories.

For colder conditions, you can add antifreeze to the solution to ensure the water doesn't freeze overnight.
Avoid adding detergent to the container as this can leave a soapy layer on your windscreen and is difficult to wipe away.
