Pavement parking in England could be BANNED under new 2022 driving rules update

DRIVERS could be banned from parking on the pavement this year as part of a huge update to road rules.

The government is considering making it illegal for motorists to block pedestrian routes with their cars.

A consultation into the idea was launched in August last year, with the responses set to be published this month.

The proposal is designed to make it easier for disabled people to get around.

One of the options on the table is a legislative change that would introduce a "London-style" pavement parking ban across England.

It would be the "most significant change to English parking law in several decades", the government consultation document said.

The move would place a blanket ban on parking on the pavement across the country - but there would be exemptions set out with road signs.

Pavement parking is banned on almost all of the capital's streets, and drivers face fines of up to £70 for breaking the rules.

Motorists can be penalised even if just one or two wheels are on the path.

Outside of London, you are currently permitted to partially park your motor on the pavement however it must not be causing an obstruction.

Other options up for consideration include improving the Traffic Regulation Order process to make it easier for local councils to ban pavement parking in their areas.

Alternatively, there could be a legislative change to allow local authorities to ban "unnecessary obstruction of the pavement".

A summary of the consultation responses will be published online within three months of its closing date, which was November 22.
