Ford Fiesta is Britain’s most nicked car – but others in the top 10 may come as a shock

A total of 3,909 of the cars were reported stolen to the police in 2021.

Overall, car thefts rose three per cent last year from 46,800 to 48,400, separate DVLA figures reveal.

Criminals targeted high-end cars including 3,754 Range Rovers, 1,474 Mercedes-Benz C-Class and 818 E-Class.

BMW 3 Series were taken 1,464 times and Land Rover Discovery's were nabbed 1,260 times.

But they also went for surprisingly cheaper and more common cars, including 1,218 Vauxhall Corsas.

Thieves took 1,755 Volkswagen Golfs too, as well as 1,096 Vauxhall Astras, reports.

John Wilmot, CEO of car leasing comparison firm, which obtained the stats, said: "The Ford Fiesta may have lost its crown as the best-selling new car in the UK but it still retains the unenviable title as being the most stolen car in Britain.

"Close behind is the Range Rover, one of the most popular luxury SUVs on the market, which has been targeted by sophisticated criminal gangs who have the knowledge and keyless tech to gain entry."

AA Cars CEO James Fairclough added those who inadvertently buy stolen cars face disaster, with them likely losing the car and their money spent.

He said: "The risk is real. "That's why it's essential that you do your research before parting with any money.

"Before buying a second-hand car, always carry out an online history check to confirm the mileage, the number of previous owners and whether the car has been stolen, been in an accident or written off."
