Furious farmer divides opinion with ‘genius’ plan to stop drivers parking ‘like wallies’ on his land

A FARMER fed up with people parking "like wallies" on his land has dreamt up a "genius" plan to put a stop to it.

Ian Flindall now charges drivers £3 for pulling up "neat and tight" on his farm - but it's a tenner if you do it terribly.

Ian's hilarious solution has been hailed a "great idea" by some motorists - but others think it's problematic.

One person said: "Genius way to stop people parking like t***s."

And a second said: "I love this idea. You'd think people who spend most of their lives packed into inner cities like sardines would be adept at handling a car, but it seems the moment you present them with a nice rural car park without painted lines they have some sort of stress-related aneurysm."

But another countered: "Isn't this an example of when 'fines' can backfire by legitimising the behaviour?"

A small section of Ian's Chypraze Farm is used as a car park for Portheras Cove footpath and beach - a Cornish beauty spot popular with tourists and locals.

It has no ticket machine, with Ian instead relying on a "honesty" system where people are encouraged to make a donation on leaving.

But drivers leaving their vehicles at dodgy angles means fewer people can get in - and therefore Ian makes less money.

So to help the situation, he introduced two different tariffs.

A new sign now reads: "Parking neat and tight £3. Parking like a wally £10."

He told : "I don’t want to charge people too much or rip people off, but if they take up four spaces then surely they should pay for four spaces.

"If people park sensibly we can get a fair few cars in, but if they don’t it’s mayhem.

"As much as one would like to leave the public to their own devices, I’m afraid some will spoil it.

"We’re quite remote fortunately, but there’s some uncontrolled parking nearby which we want to avoid."

To his surprise, Ian said he has had a few £10 notes posted into the box.

"For some strange reason, I get them tucked in quite often," he said.

"I figure they think, 'well I've just abandoned the car, here's a tenner."
