Mystery as double yellow lines suddenly appear around village leaving residents baffled

MYSTERY surrounds the sudden appearance of parking lines in a tiny village as no one seems to know why they are there.

The yellow lines were slapped all over the picturesque Cadgwith in Cornwall on Tuesday and locals are so angry they have already started a petition to get them removed.

Local Wenna Ellis said the lines “look terrible” and weren’t even necessary.

She told : “I went down the cove and was like ‘oh my god, what’s going on’.

“They look terrible and aren’t likely to be enforced so what’s the point?

“If everyone ignores them, then they aren’t going to do any good.

“Six feet of double yellow lines may have been fine but they’ve done the whole village.

“Cadgwith is so picturesque but these lines look unsightly. Everyone is really upset. We don’t really even have a parking problem here.”

Both the local parish council and the Cornwall councillor for the area appear to be in the dark about the issue.

Jeb Preston, the chairman of the local parish council, Grade Ruan, said: “Grade-Ruan Parish Council were not informed of the intention of the Highways Authority to repaint yellow lines in Cadgwith cove.

"So it comes as much as a surprise to local councillors as it does the rest of the community.”

The councillor for the area, Anthony Soady, said that he wasn’t clear about the legality of the lines but added he suspected they could have been painted to replace ones that faded many years ago.

He said he had not been informed about the decision.

The petition states: “Cadgwith Cove in Cornwall is the most picturesque fishing village but it has been ruined by yellow lines to stop people parking, there wasn’t even an issue with bad parking.

“Cadgwith is in an area of outstanding natural beauty and the lines are not very in keeping with our ‘back in time’ village.”

It adds: “Permission hadn’t been granted from our Parish council so it has come as a shock to us all, hopefully we will find out who has given this the go ahead but what we want from this petition is for them to come and remove them, not leave them there or paint over them.”

Anyone wanting to support the villagers can sign the petition here.

A spokesman for Cornwall Council said: "A new 10m section of double yellow lines has been installed in Cadgwith near the car park.

"This was at the request of the Helston and South Kerrier Community Network Panel to resolve an issue of parked vehicles blocking a footpath leading to the car park.

"As is required by law for any changes to highway restrictions, the proposals for double yellow lines were advertised in November 2021.

"This included notices on lampposts in the area and a newspaper
advert. Details were also available on the Council’s online consultation portal.

"While installing the new double yellow lines, we have also taken the opportunity to repaint the existing lines to ensure that any obstructive parking issues can be dealt with by our enforcement teams.

"The road marking paint is a shade approved for use by the Department for Transport in environmentally sensitive areas."
