In the last few days alone there have already been multiple crashes amid the -10C freeze.

Experts are now urging people to make sure their car is in a state to travel safely in too.

And they have revealed one of the most common mistakes people make when it comes to caring for their vehicles in the winter.

While having a suitable amount of washer fluid a must all-year round, there are actually different rules for different seasons.

In winter it is integral that people dilute their screen wash differently, experts say.

That's because if drivers don't, the water in the screen wash could freeze and be unusable.

auto expert told : "Too much water could end up freezing your windscreen washer system, as dilution ratios for winter weather are completely different from the summer.

"To prevent freezing you should check the suggested dilution ratios that may be provided on the bottle, otherwise, a good rule of thumb is to ensure your solution is more concentrated during the winter period."
