What does a blue road sign mean?
CAR signs seem to come in every colour of the rainbow, but understanding what they mean can be difficult.
It's been a while since most of us sat our driving tests, so here's a quick refresher on what blue road signs mean.
What does a blue road sign mean?
Blue road signs give information to drivers and their shape dictates their meaning.
It can be difficult to keep up with them, but there's a pattern to where each shape appears.
Blue circle road signs give drivers a positive instruction, i.e., "turn here" or "go there".
In other words, it's telling you to do something rather than telling you to stop.

Blue rectangular road signs are informational too, but give drivers directions.
Some may also tell you that traffic can only flow in one direction, while another might say that a bus will be driving in the opposite direction to traffic flow.
What does a red road sign mean?
Generally, when you see a red sign, you need to be a bit more alert.
Red is, after all, the colour of danger so pay attention to those red signs.
You're most likely to see these signs come in a triangle shape and the triangle means "hazard".
Often they are alerting you to important information, such as low-flying aircraft or a slippery road.
Red rings or red circles give compulsory instructions, such as "reduce your speed" or telling you that horses are not allowed on the road.
What does a green road sign mean?
Green signs indicate a primary route - often referred to as an A-road.
They tell you the easiest and most direct way of getting somewhere.
For example, a green sign may indicate the A1 which is the most direct road from London to Edinburgh.

Occasionally, you may see a light green sign.
These light green signs often contain instructions that most roads don't need, such as telling you that it is a quiet lane or that emergency vehicles can assemble somewhere.
What does a brown road sign mean?
Brown road signs let you know that you are near an area of public recreation or historical significance.
That's why you've probably seen them near play parks or on the way to landmarks such as Stonehenge.
Each sign has a little symbol, such as a flower or an anchor, that indicate what the attraction is.
