The data has also shown that families admit to cramming in as much as possible into their motor, with 81 per cent of drivers only using three-quarters of what they pack.

This can significantly increase the risk of dangerous driving - and the chances of having an accident.

According to research, 14 per cent of Britons have admitted that they have removed the spare tyre to accommodate more luggage.

But many motorists are unaware that packing too much into their vehicles could actually land them a hefty fine and penalty points.

READ MORE ON CAR FINES

Under Section 40A of the Road Traffic Act 1898, it’s an offence to use a vehicle if it involves a danger of injury to any person.

This can include offences where loads on the vehicle aren’t correctly restrained and can carry a maximum fine of £2,500 and three penalty points.

Jack Cousens, head of roads policy for the AA, told : "As families get geared up for time away, parents can end up playing a game of ‘Car Tetris’, as they try to fit suitcases, bags and children into the car.

"In most modern cars, you’d be hard-pressed to take the vehicle over its weight restriction.

"If you feel you are close to breaching the limit, drivers should head to a weighbridge and get an accurate reading."

This comes after a shocking video showed a Good Samaritan rushing to help an "unconscious driver" hanging out of his car but then realising a mortifying error.

Plus, a BMW driver was fined for some diabolical parking, but a passer-by has also handed out their own disgusting revenge.
