How reliable is your car? Britain’s most and least dependable used cars revealed – & three cheap brands come out on top

A CAR expert has revealed the most and least reliable used cars - with three more affordable brands coming out on top.

With second-hand car prices continuing to rise, buying a reliable used car that won't cost you a fortune in repairs has never been so difficult.

Handily, car experts at , in association with MotorEasy, has asked almost 25,000 owners of cars aged between six and twenty years old to comment on how dependable they've been in the last two years, how long repairs took and how expensive they were. 

The research has revealed that small and value cars had the highest overall reliability ratings, with the Honda Jazz achieving an amazing 100 per cent score.

The Japanese carmaker Suzuki achieved the highest brand rating with 94.7 per cent, followed by Lexus (92.7%) and Toyota (91.7%), while Japanese brands occupied six of the top ten most reliable brand positions.

However, Citroen was named the least dependable make, with an overall reliability score of just 60.3 per cent.

The Land Rover Discovery features the worst rating of all at 47.8 per cent, followed by the Vauxhall Astra with only 50.5%.

More expensive brands like Tesla, Mercedes and Jaguar appeared in the bottom ten most reliable brands - all receiving less than 77 per cent.

What Car? consumer editor Claire Evans commented on the data, saying it was vital for drivers to secure a car which can match their needs and last a long time.

She said: “As the rise in living costs becomes ever more acute, buyers are turning to used cars over new models. 

“Despite the potential cost savings, used cars are more expensive to buy than a year ago, and reliability is more important than ever if you don’t want to be hit by expensive and potentially time-consuming repair bills.”

What a Car? explained: "The third-generation Jazz offers the low running costs you’d expect of a small car and the space and practicality of a mini MPV.

"On top of that, it’s very unlikely to let you down because it’s extremely robust.

"In fact, not a single older Jazz suffered any faults at all, according to the owners who completed our survey."

Kia Niro Hybrid (2016-2022) - 100%

They said: "The Niro family SUV may look rather conventional, but it has a trick up its sleeve – it's exceptionally reliable.

"In fact, not one of the Niro owners who completed our reliability survey reported a fault with their car. That means nobody landed with an unexpected repair bill."

Kia Soul (2014-2019)  - 100%

What a Car? said: "There are plenty of reasons to buy a Soul. It has the chunky, fashionable exterior styling that doesn't resort to retro cues yet still manages to stand out from the crowd and has a classy and spacious interior.

But the most compelling reason to buy one over other small SUVs is its utter dependency.

Not a single diesel Sould owner in the survey reported any faults with their cars.
