Normal-looking family hatchback Ford sells for eye-watering sum – reason for huge price revealed

A NORMAL-looking family hatchback has sold for an eye-watering sum.

The 1987 Ford fetched a whopping £91,125 at auction thanks to some little-known features.

While it might appear like a normal mid-size family car, it's actually a souped-up version favoured by boy racers.

Closely resembling its cousin the Ford Sierra, the car on sale was actually a limited edition Sierra RS500 Cosworth.

Capable of blasting along at 150mph the Cossie, as it is affectionately known, is one of just 500 standard Sierra Cosworths converted in partnership with Aston Martin Tickford in the late '80s.

Only 300 of those were sold to the public, with the rest set aside to further Ford's racing pedigree.

It features the same inline-four engine as the base model, which was fitted with a larger turbocharger and served by upgraded fuel injection, oil and cooling system.

A second, lower spoiler was also added to increase downforce and improve handling, with the goal of creating the perfect track car in mind.

Inside, it is a classic '80s design with grey and red cloth seating and chunky dash.

They have now become sought-after collectors items, hence the hefty price tag.

The auction price was especially massive when you consider that the RS500 only cost £19,950 when it was new.

The lucky new owner snapped it up with just 64,600 miles on the clock at Silverstone Auctions' classic car sale on Saturday.

It comes after an Aston Martin that was found in a field looking like "Swiss cheese" is now worth around £500,000.

Meanwhile, an ultra-rare Mercedes went up for auction, but even a huge bid couldn't persuade its owner to part with it.
