RAC Breakdown spokesperson Rod Dennis told The Sun Online: “Since the hot weather took hold we’re seeing a corresponding rise in the number of breakdowns our patrols are going out to – up around 10% a day, equating to hundreds more vehicles failing.

"The good news though is there’s a lot drivers can do to avoid this happening in the first place, and checking coolant and oil levels before any trip should be the first thing.

“It’s also vital drivers travel prepared in the heat – while no-one expects to break down, if they do it’s important they’ve taken steps to stay safe."

The expert explained stocking up on water, food and emergency medication is "crucial".

Sun protection in the form of hats, sun cream and umbrellas is also vital.

BATTERIES

Vehicle batteries can struggle during the heat due to a change in driving activity.

Many Brits embark on long journeys as they drive to a holiday destination, and this can wear down the vital component.

These trips often include sitting in slow moving traffic with more devices in use, such as phones, tablets, and sat navs - all of which drain the battery.

RAC experts advice checking or replacing the battery if it's not new.

A three-year replacement cycle is recommended, with issues arising more frequently after four or five years.

TYRES

As caravans and trailers hit the roads amid heatwaves and beach days, the RAC warned Brits to check their tyres before heading off on a long journey.

Check the condition of the tyres, looking out for worn down thread, or any wear and tear.
